Q. Can I apply for a position at Jones Day if Jones Day does not interview at my law school?
A. Yes.  You may submit an application for employment through the Jones Day web site.  For more information on career opportunities and the self application process, please visit our opportunities page.

Q. What can I expect from Jones Day's interview process?
A.
Our interview process usually begins with a short interview on campus or in one of our offices.  You may be invited back to a Jones Day office for a longer “call back” interview where you will have an opportunity to meet with a variety of Jones Day lawyers.  We hope that the process will give you an opportunity to learn more about Jones Day and for us to get to know you.

Q. May I apply to more than one Jones Day office?
A. You may apply to any Jones Day office in which you have an interest.  During the On-Campus Interviewing Program, however, we ask that you sign up for a single Jones Day interview.  Each interviewing team will interview candidates for all Jones Day offices and you can advise the team during your interview of any other offices you may be interested in.

Q. What is the length of Jones Day’s summer programs and when do they start?
A. Our Summer Associate Program generally lasts from 8 to 10 weeks.  The exact dates are announced by each Jones Day office in the Spring.

Q. Are Jones Day Summer Associates assigned mentors?
A.
Yes.  Each Summer Associate is paired with at least one lawyer mentor for the Summer.  Your summer mentor(s) will help guide you through all aspects of the Summer Associate Program, from professional development to specific work assignments to social integration.

Q. How are Jones Day Summer Associates assigned work?
A. Before arriving at Jones Day for the Summer, you will be asked about your preferences, if any, for substantive work experiences and practice areas. Our lawyer work assignors will work with you through the Summer to help you get the type of work you want and be sure you have the opportunity to experience working with a number of different lawyers on a variety of matters.

Q. Will I have an opportunity to do pro bono work as a Jones Day Summer Associate?
A.
Yes.  Jones Day has a strong commitment to pro bono work and each of our Summer Associates is given an opportunity to do pro bono work.

Q. What type of training can I expect to receive as a Jones Day Summer Associate?
A.
In addition to “on the job” training found by working on matters with more senior lawyers, we offer a number of training programs (such as deposition training, negotiation workshops and writing programs) created specifically for our Summer Associates.  For more information about our professional development programs, visit the training portion of the New Lawyers Group.

Q. Will I have a chance to learn about judicial clerkship opportunities during my Summer at Jones Day?
A. Yes.  We have a number of former judicial clerks at Jones Day who are committed to helping our Summer Associates learn about clerkship opportunities during the course of the Summer. 

Q. What type of feedback can I expect to receive as a Jones Day Summer Associate?
A. You should expect to receive informal feedback from mentors and other lawyers you are working with over the course of the Summer.  In addition, we will sit down with you for a Mid-Summer and End-of-Summer review where you will have an opportunity to receive more formal feedback about each of your work assignments.

Q. If I receive an offer at the end of the Summer Associate Program, will it be an offer to join a specific Jones Day practice area?
A.
No.  An offer from Jones Day is an offer to join the Firm as an associate in the New Lawyers Group.  You will have an opportunity to then explore a variety of practice areas during your first year with the Firm.  More information can be found on the New Lawyers Group tab and under The Jones Day Way.

Judicial Clerks

Q. Does Jones Day offer seniority or compensation credit to associates joining the Firm after a judicial clerkship? 
A. Yes.  Jones Day offers both a bonus and seniority credit (for both compensation and seniority purposes) to associates joining the Firm directly from a federal court or state supreme court clerkship. More information can be found on the Value of Clerking tab under each office.

Q. What practice area will I be assigned to when joining Jones Day after a judicial clerkship?
A. Incoming clerks are given the option of joining the New Lawyers Group, which allows them the freedom to explore various practices at Jones Day before committing to a specific practice area.  Some of our incoming judicial clerks may choose, after discussions with the Office Hiring Partner, to join a specific practice area such as Trial Practice.

Experienced Lawyers

Q. What types of pro bono opportunities are available to Jones Day lawyers?
A.
In recent years, Jones Day lawyers have represented pro bono clients in numerous cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, and before federal and state trial and appellate courts.  Many Jones Day lawyers have represented individuals who are seeking political asylum before United States' Citizenship and Immigration Services.  Still others provide a variety of services for the indigent and homeless of our communities.  Our corporate and transactional attorneys routinely assist charitable organizations with articles of incorporation, real estate purchases, contract negotiations, and employment disputes.  For more information, please visit our Pro Bono site.

Q. What type of training can I expect to receive as a Jones Day associate?
A. Jones Day is committed to ensuring that its lawyers are given the opportunity to develop the full range of professional skills necessary to succeed and to service our client’s needs.  We offer our associates a wide range of training programs, including deposition skills, motions, expert testimony, openings and closings, direct and cross examination, courtroom technology, negotiations, legal strategy, financial analysis and accounting basics, contracts and transactional drafting, public speaking and legal writing.

Q. What type of feedback can I expect to receive as a Jones Day associate?
A. Our associates are given direct feedback throughout the past year by the senior lawyers who are supervising the associate’s work.  In addition, every year each supervising lawyer prepares a written evaluation of the associate’s performance, focusing on strengths, weaknesses, and suggested areas for improvement.  We review the evaluations with each associate during our annual review process.  Members of our New Lawyers Group receive additional feedback and a formal "mid-term" evaluation after their first few months at the Firm.
