Jones Day’s Beijing office is in the heart of China’s ancient capital and in the midst of Beijing’s futuristic Central Business District alongside the iconic Rem Koolhaus designed CCTV tower. This modern and yet historic city is home to Jones Day’s newest office in China, which opened in 2003.
The M&A practice concentrates on advising foreign companies involved in transactions in China as well as Chinese companies with respect to their investments and business activities outside China. Our Beijing lawyers work closely with their colleagues in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and other Jones Day offices to ensure that our clients understand the complicated and often time-consuming legal and regulatory environment in China. We provide advice to a number of industries including the automotive, aviation, banking and finance, chemical, computer, construction, logistics, private equity, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, real estate and telecommunications industries.
Beijing also serves as the center for our China dispute resolution practice. One part of that practice is our internationally renowned China arbitration practice, which regularly counsels foreign companies in CIETAC, BAC and SAC arbitrations. The other half is our litigation practice, which handles high-stakes litigation for multinational clients inside and outside of China, working with hand-picked local trial counsel for matters before various courts. We also have experience in other forms of dispute resolution, such as mediation. Increasingly, we are becoming involved in advising Chinese and other Asian companies on their disputes outside China, including arbitrations in Hong Kong, Paris, London, Stockholm, and litigations in the trial and appellate courts in United States, Europe and around the world. The Beijing office dispute resolution practice is regularly recognised by independent legal directories as one the leading dispute resolution practices in China, and counts three CIETAC arbitrators amongst its members.
Our Beijing lawyers also give back to the community through our active and diverse pro bono practice, which primarily assists NGO and charities providing relief and support services in China. We are proud of our continued involvement with the Half the Sky Foundation, The Dandelion Project and The Alliance for Smiles.
While committed to serving our clients, we are just as committed to the city of Beijing. Our International Legal Fellowship program awards grants to students in Beijing universities to encourage the study of law in China. The Firm grants these Fellowships in the hope that the recipients will use the money to support their education and experience in whichever legal areas they choose to pursue.
The intellectual property practice in the Beijing office has been involved in many high profile matters in China, and regularly counsels European, Japanese and U.S. companies involved in patent disputes with a worldwide focus, as well as on trademark and patent prosecution, portfolio management, strategic counseling and transactional due diligence.
The capital markets practice in Beijing provides advice to Chinese companies looking to raise finance on the capital markets in Hong Kong, London and New York, and works closely with our lawyers in these offices. Similarly, our anti-trust practice works closely with members of our Anti-Trust and Competition Law practice in Europe, Japan and the U.S. and is at the cutting-edge of this new area of law in China.
Jones Day is one of very few global law firms to have a dedicated tax practice. From Beijing we are able to provide tax counsel to clients engaged in complex corporate transactions, particularly cross-border deals with international tax implications.
Uniquely for a foreign law firm in China, Jones Day also has industry-focused practices that concentrate on areas such as construction and oil & gas, and which provide in-depth advice on specific areas of the law with a detailed industry focus. These industry-focused practices support the transactional and dispute practices and provide a key edge for our clients. In fact, our construction practice has been ranked as the best in China by the Chambers legal directory for two years running.
