Jones Day has been a Washington, D.C. landmark since 1946.  Today, the firm’s past and future meet at the corner of Louisiana and New Jersey Avenues, where the firm occupies the granite-faced Acacia Building, designed and built in 1935 by the architects responsible for the Empire State Building, and America’s Square, a state of the art glass building completed in 2009 by Pritzker Award-winning architect Sir Richard Rogers.  These architectural monuments – joined by a rooftop garden overlooking the Capitol and the National Mall – are home to more than 200 lawyers offering the full range of the firm’s services.

The depth of our bench is impressive, if we do say so ourselves.  Our colleagues include former assistant attorney generals, Supreme Court clerks, a federal district court judge, and the general counsel of the Department of Commerce.  We count among our alumni a prominent member of Congress, a federal court of appeals judge, and the general counsel of two of the nation’s largest companies.  Washington lawyers are regularly recognized as the best in the nation and world, but we value above all external honors the satisfaction of our clients, who appreciate the collective efforts of all our attorneys to effectively and efficiently serve their needs.

Washington's litigation practice is one of the largest in the city, with extensive experience in national and international litigation, as well as cases in state and federal courts in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.  We litigate a wide range of complex business disputes, with particular depth in antitrust, corporate criminal investigations, intellectual property, labor and employment, employee benefits, product liability, and securities and shareholder matters.  Washington litigators recently played a key role in assisting Chrysler in its historic proceedings in bankruptcy court.

The Washington office is also home base for the firm’s Issues & Appeals practice, founded in 1973 by Erwin Griswold, dean of the Harvard Law School from 1946 to 1967 and the Solicitor General under Presidents Johnson and Nixon.  The group prides itself on the depth of its bench, with 10 of its lawyers having Supreme Court arguments under their belts and 40 having federal court of appeals arguments to their credit.

Jones Day's Antitrust & Competition Law is headed by a Washington Partner, and is regularly identified at the top of every short list of leading antitrust practices in the world.  Jones Day is the only firm whose lawyers have served as both Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust and Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, and four Jones Day lawyers have been elected chairman of the ABA's Antitrust Law Section.  Our competition law colleagues have successfully steered clients through some of the largest and most closely scrutinized transactions and criminal antitrust cases in history, including the merger of satellite radio companies XM and Sirius, and the world-wide investigation of the vitamins cartel.

Lawyers in Washington's Government Regulation Practice advise clients in an endless variety of governmental disputes and investigations, including SEC investigations, congressional hearings, and NAFTA arbitration claims.  The office has a significant energy practice, and our lawyers appear regularly before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and other state utility commissions.

Jones Day Washington also offers a wide range of corporate legal services, from advice regarding lending and structured finance transactions to mergers and acquisitions.  Washington's tax lawyers provide cutting-edge tax counsel to clients engaged in complex corporate transactions, including cross-border deals with international tax implications, and regularly represent clients before the IRS.

Our lawyers give back to the community through our active and diverse pro bono practice.  Washington lawyers devoted more than 24,000 hours to pro bono service in 2008.  We routinely staff the D.C. Bar Free Legal Advice and Referral Clinic (which Jones Day created in conjunction with the D.C. Bar in 1996), participate in clinics for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, and support client intake projects for the Capital Area Immigrant Rights Coalition and the Children’s Law Center.  Our extensive pro bono efforts were recently recognized by the D.C. Bar, which named Jones Day as the city’s 2008 Pro Bono Firm of the Year.

Our lawyers are as diverse as our practice areas.  We have sixteen women partners – including the Partner in Charge and the Hiring Partner -- and seven minority partners.  44% of our associates are women and 23% are lawyers of color.  In short, we welcome all lawyers who share our commitment to our clients, our community, and to the practice of law as a collective enterprise.
