How To Apply


No psychometric tests, no additional questions and no assessment tests at interview. We are looking for exceptional individuals, not standard applicants, so save our searching questions for interview, not our application form.

We recruit on a rolling basis so please be aware of our application windows and apply as soon as possible after applications open to avoid disappointment. If you would like to find out more about our distinct training before you apply, why not attend one of our events?

Stage 1 - Register and apply through our Jones Day programme web page

You must register through our web page to apply for any position within Jones Day.

Pre-screen questions

Before you start your application, we will ask you some questions to ensure (a) you are eligible to apply for our Placement Schemes and Training Contract and (b) we can assess your application accurately and fairly in the context of your educational and personal circumstances.

Complete your application

After the pre-screen stage, we will ask you to register your personal details, complete the online application form, and include a cover letter and referee details.

Stage 2 - Application reviewed by Graduate Recruitment Manager

Once you submit your application, we will acknowledge its receipt immediately by e-mail. Your application will then be screened and a decision will be made about whether to invite you to interview.

Stage 3 - Academic reference requested

We will probably request an academic reference to help us to make a decision as to whether to invite you to interview. We ask that referees respond within 10 days and it helps if you ensure your referee is available.

Stage 4 - Interview

If successful, you will be invited to an interview with two senior lawyers, which will take place in person or online between October and March. Because we recruit on a rolling basis, if demand is high, we may prioritise interviews for our Winter and Spring schemes over interviews for our Summer schemes. The interview will focus on assessing your genuine interest in Jones Day and in practising as a lawyer undertaking global transactions for sophisticated national and multinational corporate clients. We do not give assessment exercises or written tests to any of our candidates. We reimburse reasonable UK travel expenses, but if these are likely to exceed £80, please check with us first so you know how much you can expect to be reimbursed. If you are travelling specifically to interview from abroad, again, please check with us first as to how much you can expect to be reimbursed and whether an alternative interview by video link would be preferable.

Stage 5 - If successful, you will receive an email offer to attend one of our work Placement Schemes

If successful at interview, you will be invited to join one of our Placement Schemes on which you are guaranteed to be considered for a Training Contract (provided you are in or past your final year of undergraduate study or in the penultimate year of a qualifying law degree) in order for us to decide whether to make you a Training Contract offer.

Stage 6 - If successful on Placement Scheme, you will receive an offer of a Training Contract

If successful on placement with us, you will receive a Training Contract offer. We aim to let you know the outcome of your application within 3 weeks of scheme conclusion (the second scheme conclusion in Summer).
